Choosing a credential is one of the first decisions in any access control project, and it shapes cost, security and convenience for years. Here is how the three most common options compare.
Key cards
Proximity and smart cards are affordable, fast to issue and familiar to staff. Modern encrypted cards are far harder to clone than older 125 kHz cards, so if you are upgrading an existing system, check which technology your cards use.

Key fobs
Fobs work the same way as cards but live on a keyring, so they are harder to lose and survive daily wear better. They are a popular choice for multi-residential buildings and parkades.
Mobile credentials
Mobile access turns a smartphone into the key. Nothing to print, nothing to hand back when someone leaves, and access can be granted or removed remotely in seconds.
- Best for offices with changing teams and visitors
- Works well alongside cards for staff who prefer them
- Needs a cloud-managed system and compatible readers
Most properties do best with a mix: mobile access for staff, fobs for residents and temporary cards for contractors.
